Red Studies (2004/06) red watercolour on paper. In this series of red watercolours of people known to Goodwin the process of layering is an attempt to contain in a single image more detail about each individual. The fragility of the lines is sometimes barely visible due to the scale of the paper and the distance at which the viewer needs to stand in order to have an overall sense of the figure and the stances they have been captured in.
The set of 6 portraits from 2006 feature individuals at moments of introspection and anxiety. In each portrait there is an implicit drama caught between the two superimposed expressions. Goodwin is interested in exposing a momentary vulnerability in the subjects.
